The CUET exam is India's national entrance test for undergraduate admission to participating universities. It provides students with a common entrance exam for applying to multiple universities through a single CUET score. This guide covers essential CUET exam information, including the full form, eligibility criteria, CUET exam date 2027, registration process, syllabus, exam pattern, fees, courses and result process.

NTA has not yet announced the official 2027 schedule, so the dates mentioned in this guide are expected based on the 2026 CUET cycle. Students should check the official NTA notification for the latest updates before applying.

What is the CUET Exam?

CUET stands for Common University Entrance Test. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts this CUET entrance exam so that a single test and a single score can be used for undergraduate admission to central universities and other participating universities. It gives students from every board one standardized platform instead of separate university entrance tests.

So, what is the CUET exam for? Its purpose is to simplify admission. A student takes one computer-based test and applies to many universities with the same NTA score. In 2026, 15,68,867 candidates registered and 244 universities took part.

NTA only conducts the test and publishes scores. Each university prepares its own merit list and runs its own counselling.

CUET 2027 Exam Highlights

CUET UG 2027 is expected to follow the 2026 format: a computer-based test with 50 compulsory multiple-choice questions per subject, 60 minutes per paper and a maximum of five subjects. Marking is +5 for every correct answer and -1 for every wrong answer. NTA confirms all details through the official CUET information bulletin.

CUET Exam Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination, or are appearing for it in the exam year, can apply for the CUET exam. NTA does not set an age limit or minimum marks requirement for appearing in the test. However, eligibility requirements can vary by university and course.

Students should check the specific minimum percentage, required subjects, subject combinations and age criteria set by their chosen university before applying.

Academic Qualification & Age Limit

Accepted qualifying examinations include Class 12 from any recognised central or state board, the Intermediate or two year Pre University examination, and NIOS with a minimum of five subjects. Candidates with a three year AICTE recognised diploma may also be eligible. Students with international qualifications, such as A levels or the IB Diploma, can also apply.

You may choose CUET subjects irrespective of your Class 12 stream, but they must match the subject requirements of your target course. Since universities may have different eligibility criteria, check the requirements of your chosen course before applying.

Number of Attempts Allowed

NTA does not cap the number of attempts. The exam is held once a year, so you can appear again in a later year. Each score is valid only for the admission year of that cycle.

CUET Exam Date 2027

NTA has not yet released the official CUET 2027 exam dates. Based on the 2026 cycle, registration is expected to begin around January 2027, with the exam likely to be held from May to June 2027 and the result announced in late June 2027. The exam is conducted in multiple shifts over several days, and your admit card will mention your exact exam date, shift and exam centre.

CUET Exam Syllabus 2027 (Subject-Wise)

The CUET syllabus has three parts: language tests, domain-specific subjects and a General Aptitude Test. Domain subject questions follow the NCERT Class 12 syllabus, language tests assess reading comprehension and vocabulary, and the General Test covers current affairs, reasoning and numerical ability. NTA publishes the detailed syllabus on its website for each cycle.

Language Section Syllabus

The 13 languages are English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Each paper tests reading comprehension (factual, literary and narrative passages), literary aptitude and vocabulary.

Domain-Specific Subject Syllabus

There are 23 domain subjects, all based on NCERT Class 12, including Accountancy, Agriculture, Anthropology, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Economics, Fine Arts, Geography, History, Home Science, Knowledge Tradition and Practices of India, Mass Media, Mathematics, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Sanskrit and Sociology.

General Test Syllabus

The General Aptitude Test covers general knowledge, current affairs, general mental ability, numerical ability, quantitative reasoning (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, statistics) and logical and analytical reasoning.

CUET Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme

The CUET exam pattern is a computer-based test with 50 compulsory multiple-choice questions and 60 minutes per subject. You can choose up to five subjects, including languages and the General Test. Each correct answer earns five marks, each wrong answer deducts one mark, and unattempted questions carry no penalty, so every paper is worth 250 marks.

How to Prepare for the CUET Exam? (Preparation Tips)

Prepare for the CUET exam by mastering the NCERT Class 12 books for your domain subjects, practising reading comprehension daily, revising current affairs and solving timed mock tests. With only 60 minutes for 50 questions, speed and accuracy matter equally. Choose subjects that match your target courses before you start.

  • Study the NCERT line by line, since domain papers are built on it.

  • Fix a daily slot for language and General Test practice.

  • Review every mock test to find weak chapters.

  • Skip guesses on questions you cannot narrow down, because each wrong answer costs a mark.

CUET Question Paper & Mock Tests

Start with the sample papers and mock tests on the NTA website to get used to the screen interface. Then solve a CUET question paper from previous years under timed conditions. Fifty questions in 60 minutes leaves about 72 seconds per question, so practise pacing early.

Best Books & Study Material for CUET

NCERT Class 12 textbooks are the core material. For the language and General Test, many students add Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis for vocabulary, a standard quantitative aptitude book such as R.S. Aggarwal's, and a daily newspaper for current affairs.

CUET Exam Courses: Which Courses Can You Get With CUET?

CUET gives access to undergraduate programmes such as BA, BSc, BCom, BBA and BA Honours at participating universities, including subjects like English, Economics, History, Political Science, Mathematics, Mass Communication and Fine Arts. Courses vary by university, and you must pick CUET subjects that match each course's mapping. Engineering and medicine generally use separate exams such as JEE and NEET.

CUET Result, Scorecard & Admission Process

NTA declares the CUET exam result online at cuet.nta.nic.in after releasing the provisional and final answer keys. In 2026, the result came on 23 June. Candidates download the scorecard with their application number and password or date of birth. Admission is then handled by each participating university through its own counselling and merit list.

  1. Check the provisional answer key and, if needed, challenge it (₹200 per question in 2026).

  2. Read the final answer key and download your NTA scorecard.

  3. Register on each university's admission portal for the course you want.

  4. Wait for the merit list and counselling schedule.

  5. Complete document verification and pay the admission fee.

NTA does not offer re-evaluation of results and has no role in preparing merit lists. Keep every university's CUET admission notice in view.

List of Universities Accepting CUET Score

More than 240 universities used CUET scores in 2026, including 48 central universities such as the University of Delhi, JNU, BHU, AMU, Jamia Millia Islamia, the University of Hyderabad and the University of Allahabad. State, deemed and private universities also participate. The list changes every year, so confirm it on the NTA portal.

Other central universities include Pondicherry University, Visva-Bharati, Tezpur University, EFLU and the Central Universities of Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Private universities such as Teerthanker Mahaveer University also accept CUET scores.

Not every route runs through one national test. Students aiming for creative careers in film, fashion, animation, journalism, design or photography can also explore AAFT University, which admits students through its own AAFT Global Entrance Test (GEE). Check the official AAFT fee structure page for current fee details.
